Exercise is Bigger Than Weight Loss

When the word exercise comes to mind do you immediately think weight loss? If so, you are sadly missing out! People often think of working out as a way to lose weight, and we easily lose sight of the fact our bodies are meant to move! I want to take a moment and review some of the reasons being active is so important to our health, and not just our weight.

#1. It is proven to lift your mood

There are several reasons activity will help increase your happiness. First of all, physical activity increases the production of endorphin's, a chemical produced by the body to help diminish pain and bring positive feelings. This process also helps to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety! Not to mention the confidence you will gain from knowing you are taking care of you!

#2. It will help you get your ZZZ's

People who exercise regularly have a higher chance of getting a good nights sleep, not only the quantity but also the quality. I'm sure some of the mood lifting helps, but also think of a day where you were really physically worn out. It feels so good to lie down! And don't forget the kids. Its amazing to watch children move, as if they could never run out of energy, only to hit the pillow exhausted sleep so peacefully.

#3. Exercise builds strong bones

Don't stop at the vitamin D! Bones also need a 'bone healthy' exercise program! Weigh bearing movements are proven to slow bone loss and even build new bone. Activities that put stress on bones actually stimulate extra deposits of calcium, and boost bone-forming cells into action. And all you young ladies out there, don't think this doesn't apply to you! Starting young helps prevent the need to fix problems later.

#4. Exercise helps prevent disease

According to the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/pa-health/index.htm) regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health! They list benefits as reduction in your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndromes and cancers. Regardless of your age, these are all health concerns we should be working to avoid!

#5. Exercise helps build your self-confidence, self-control and self-love!

One of the worst things you can do when starting to workout is to quit too early! I think we can all relate to this situation. It leads to a lack of the three important words above. Start your workout plan slowly, build as you go and don't get discouraged too early. Once you stick to a plan you will achieve all the benefits listed above, plus more. And I think we could all use a little more of each of these!

The five benefits listed above are just the tip of iceberg! Exercising has many benefits and is vital to living a happy, healthy life. You don't have to make it overwhelming, even a daily walk is better than not!
